"This Data Already Exists in the Wii System Memory" or "You must first play this game on this console"

What to do will depend on what kind of data you are trying to work with:

        Wii Game Save Data:

      1. Access the Wii save data screen. With the "Wii" tab selected, check to see if you have a data file for the game.
        • If there is a data file, you can only have one data file for each game. If you wish to replace the data file on the system with the data file on an SD Card, you will need to erase the data file on the system. (Please be sure you realize that erasing the data file from the console will erase all save files associated with it.) Continue to step 2.
        • If you do not have a data file for that game, continue to step 2.
      2. With the game disc in the console, select the "SD Card" tab on the Wii save data screen.
      3. Click on the data file for the game, and then "copy." The console will then attempt to copy the data file from the SD card to its internal memory.
        • If a message indicates the file has been copied and there is no additional error messages received, you can now access the game from the Disc Channel and use any save files you have from the copied game.
        • If you receive an error, continue to step 4.
      4. Access the game from the Disc Channel and create a save file for the game. (Consult the manual for the game you are playing for information on how to do this). You don't need to actually play the game at all.
      5. Access the Wii save data screen. With the "Wii" tab selected, check to see if you now have a data file for the game. (If you don't, you will need to go back into the game to create one.)
      6. Now erase the data file from the Wii console (the "Wii" tab should be selected). Select the "SD Card" tab on the Wii save data screen and then "copy" the data file from the SD Card to the console.
      7. If the error persists, please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we can try and determine if the issue you are experiencing is with the Wii console or the saved game data.

        Virtual Console Save Data:

      1. Check the Wii Channel Management to see if the game's channel appears.
        • If the game does not appear amongst the other channels, re-download it from the Wii Shop Channel (it will not cost anything if you have already downloaded it using the same Wii console).
        • If the game appears, go to step 2.
      2. Check the Wii save data screen (how to) to see if there is a save file for the game.
        • If there is a save file, please note that you can only have one save file for each game. If you wish to replace the save file on the system with the save file on the SD Card, then erase the save file. Continue to step 3.
        • If there is not a save file for the game, continue to step 3.
      3. Copy the save file from the SD Card management screen.
        • If this works, then the issue appears to be resolved. Try playing the game to verify that it is working properly.
        • If it does not work or you are receiving an error code, continue to step 4.
      4. Play the game up to the point where you are able to save (which will vary by game), then save the game (not all virtual console games have save information).
      5. Erase the save file from the Wii console, then copy the save file from the SD Card.
      6. If the error persists, try another SD Card, if available. If you have tried all these steps and it's still not working, this indicates an issue with the Wii console. Please click here for repair options.

"There is no Mii save data on your Wii Remote. Format this save data?"

It is safe to select "Yes." This message simply means that there has never been a Mii saved to your Wii Remote, and the system needs to prepare the Wii Remote before it can save this type of data.

    "Message Board Data is Full"

This message appears when the Wii console's internal system memory is full. If you like, you can copy some data over to an SD card (how to).

If you do not have an SD card, or are not interested in saving any data, the oldest messages will be deleted automatically.

    "WiiConnect24 is Turned Off"

This message can appear if you attempt to access a feature that requires the WiiConnect24 option to be turned on (such as the Forecast Channel). To get these features to work properly, WiiConnect24 Standby Connection must be turned on (how to).

"There is a problem with WiiConnect24. Return to the Wii Menu to confirm internet settings"

This message can appear if you attempt to send a Mii from the Mii Plaza, but Parental Controls have been enabled to block the sending/receiving of Miis.

For more information on Parental Controls, including how to edit them, click here.

"You cannot use the Shop Channel because you have not agreed to the User Agreements"

You must first agree to the User Agreements for using the Wii Shop Channel, before you can access it. To view and agree to the User Agreements:

      1. Select the Wii button from the Wii Menu, then select "settings." Select the right arrow to go to the second page, then select "Internet."
      2. Select "User Agreements," then "Yes." When the agreements appear, select "I agree."
      3. For more detailed steps, including screen shots, click here.

"Lost Communication With the Wii Remote"

      1. Try resetting the Wii Remote, by taking out the batteries of the Wii Remote, then putting them back in (you don't need to use new batteries). Wait a few seconds before pressing any buttons to wake up the Wii Remote. If after attempting to use the Wii Remote again you are still experiencing problems, try this step again, but this time leave the batteries out for 1 minute.
      2. RF interference can sometimes cause communication problems in the Wii Remote. Turn off or move away from any wireless devices, such as cordless phones, microwaves, etc.
      3. Try another Wii Remote, if possible.
        • If another Wii Remote works, there is likely a problem with the original Wii Remote. Please call 1-800-255-3700 for repair options.
        • If another Wii Remote is not working, or if you are unable to try another Wii Remote, please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.

    "You Need the Classic Controller"

This message indicates that the Classic Controller is not plugged in. It will appear on any game that uses the Classic Controller. (For more information on using the Classic Controller, please click here.)

If the game is compatible with other controllers, you will still be able to use them. For example, if the game uses the Nintendo GameCube Controller, you will still receive this message even if the Nintendo GameCube controller is inserted; however, you will be able to play with the Nintendo GameCube Controller just fine.

Please note that, when using the Nintendo GameCube Controller, ensure that it's plugged into the controller slot closest to the front of the console.
